The starting point of implementing SBG is to establish clean learning objectives for your course. We recommend establishing three or four main course learning objectives. These learning objectives represent big picture goals that you have for your students. An example of the learning objectives for a senior mechanical engineering capstone design course is illustrated below.
The next step is to break each of these main learning objectives into smaller, measurable sub-objectives. We recommend between two to four sub-objectives for each main objective. For the mechanical engineering capstone design course example, we have specified the sub-objectives listed below.
These sub-objectives are what you will be assessing students on through the semester, so make sure that they are written so that they can easily be assessed. Make sure to use strong, action verbs in order to identify observable, measurable behaviors. Some examples of strong, action verbs are provided below.
